Darker than Black, Week 18: Tcho 99% Dark Chocolate Critters
I admit, the entire reason I bought this chocolate is because of the name. Lined up next to each other on the counter, all the Tcho's next to each other, all I could see is "Tcho-Tcho," which of course immediately made me think of Lovecraft and required that I buy this. That they were animal forms was even better, of course. After all, how better to cast their horrific sorceries and expose thousands to the glories of cannibalism than through tasty dark chocolate shaped like hedgehogs and owls and rabbits?

I kid, of course. At 99% cacao there's not enough room for anything other than chocolate in here. Certainly no white pork flavor.

Something else I appreciate is that they came in nice, bite-sized portions. Often I'm tempted to eat my entire half of the bar when softlykarou and I are splitting one, but here I could much more easily portion out my section and pace myself. I mean, I didn't, but I could have.

Secret ingredient: bak bon dzhow

These are extremely similar to the French Broad chocolate, down to the sour taste and creamy texture, and to be honest I don't have that much to say here that I haven't already said in that blog post. I suppose that makes sense, considering the ingredients--this is 99%, which doesn't leave any room for anything else to provide a difference in taste. When I first started this series I turned my nose up a bit at all the chocolates we were eating which were only 70% cacao, but I've since learned that you need a large enough percentage of other ingredients to actually change the taste in a meaningful fashion. If all you put in your chocolate is cacao, that's all it tastes like.

This chocolate does have a superior shape, though. While I'm a big fan of Raaka's undifferentiated chocolate bars, there's a reason people like animal crackers and chocolate rabbits. There are cute woodland creatures who are also incredibly dark chocolate. What's not to like?

Tasty forest friends.

softlykarou's Opinion
I don't have a lot to say about this one other than that I didn't like it. It's odd, because I liked the other 99% bar that we had, but this one was chalky and the texture bothered me more than the taste. I didn't mind the sour, bitter taste of 99% though it's not a flavor I prefer, but the texture really got to me. It's clearly meant to be baking chocolate that you melt and not chocolate that you eat...unless you're dorchadas.
I didn't taste any of that. It's not like I haven't had chalky super-dark chocolate before, because I had, but not here. Maybe I'm finally becoming used to bitterness? That will serve me well in my old age then!
